Fayette-based program helps mothers from Grady

April 17, 2003 -- A Peachtree City-based program is helping low-income families care for their newborns.

Last fall, Tina Patrick and her daughter, Sanchia, launched  the non-profit organization because of their love for children.

"My family has always been very passionate about parenting, and we wanted to contribute to families in the community and throughout the Atlanta area," said Sanchia Patrick.

Through a partnership with the Grady Health System in Atlanta, Baby Peaches is assisting families by providing baby care, safety and educational products.  The staff at Grady helps the group by connecting it with those in special need of help, Ms. Patrick said.  The products in a Peach Baby Bag include a first-year baby care book, electrical outlet covers, thermometers, washcloths and toys.

"Our main purpose is to help new families celebrate new life," said Tina Patrick.

"We are thrilled about launching this program in Atlanta and hope to make a positive impact throughout the year."

Their goal is for Baby Peaches to have a presentation every month at Grady.

"Eventually, I would like for the program to not only reach newborns in Atlanta, but in other cities as well," said Sanchia Patrick.

On April 9, Baby Peaches presented baby bags to five mothers who are HIV/AIDS positive.

"Our program is not geared necessarily to mothers with AIDS, but they had a need, and we wanted to provide for them," said Sanchia Patrick.

Approximately 20 people have joined Baby Peaches, and Sanchia Patrick is encouraging more people to get involved.

"We have started doing some local promoting by holding a membership drive.  So, we are hoping the numbers will increase," she said.

Members of the local community can become 2003 Baby Peaches members for a $10 fee.  They will receive an annual newsletter on the organization's progress and contributions to the education, care and support of new parents/providers.

The organization also takes donations to fund the baby bags.  For more information, call Baby Peaches at (678) 481-9976.
